Individuals can benefit from and act as mentors in various life stages. Mentors work with mentees in schools and the workplace as well as in community organizations. Mentors generally assist others in a selfless fashion. In many cases, they gain advantages from working with their own mentors. Other times, individuals simply seek to become a positive influence within their communities.

Mentors generally seek to grow the people they guide, demonstrating the qualities of encouragement, honesty, generosity, and intelligence. They also work to enable others to tap into their hidden talents.

Mentoring also provides tangible benefits to those receiving the assistance. One study found that some graduates of MBA programs who worked with mentors earned in excess of $22,000 more than their peers on an annual basis.

Electricity serves clean power for factories, homes, and city services. Although generation and transmission requires initial capital investment, electric power offers safety and adapts to a variety of production sources. Providers of power continue to implement innovations to meet increased demand for reliable service.

After introducing electric lights at his New Jersey home in 1880, Thomas Edison worked for nearly two years to develop a system capable of facilitating the commercial sale of electricity by cities and private providers. He fulfilled this goal in 1882, throwing the switch on the Pearl Street Station in downtown New York City; it served such clients as the New York Stock Exchange, the New York Times, and J.P. Morgan and Co. By 1884, municipalities in other parts of the United States acquired power plants, and the age of electric-powered cities had begun. In Part 2 of this article, learn more about the emergence of the electric power industry.
